The Baltzer Meyer Historical Society has begun to index its storehouse of obituaries of former Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, residents, and is now making this index available to the public.

This collection of obituaries has been obtained from BMHS members and friends over many years, and it is constantly being updated.

The index is an evolving process and will take several months to complete. So, if you don't find the name of the person you seek at this time, be sure and check back again as the list is being frequently updated.

In general, the index contains the last and first name of the deceased, the date of death (if known), and a library code.

Many obituaries for women show their maiden name as a part of the obituary heading. This is reflected in our listings. Where the maiden name was not part of the heading, we scanned the text for it. If found, we included it in brackets.

Most of the listings include the actual obituary. In some instances we have only an ancillary record (a photograph, memorial card, news article, funeral notice, etc.). The "Comments" column will explain what

information we have for any given individual. An obituary is assumed in all cases unless the Comments column says otherwise; such as an entry which reads "News Article Only."

If a "+" precedes an entry in the "Comments" column (such as "+Memorial Card"), it means that we have a Memorial Card as well as the obituary for the individual listed.

Because of the way our obituary and related materials are archived, an individual may appear more than once in our online listing. Please provide all Location Codes in your request -- BUT PAY FOR ONLY ONE OF THEM. A request for any given individual will net you a copy of all of the non-duplicate information referenced for that individual.

The records are indexed alphabetically by surname. Go to INDEX OF OBITUARIES to begin your search.

If you are interested in receiving a copy of a record(s), please submit a written request giving the surname and given name of the deceased, and the associated date and library code that appear in our list. The cost is $3.00 per record. This fee covers lookups, photocopies, and envelope and postage.
