BMHS Center

Due largely to a $15,000.00 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, we were able to complete the installation of the heating system at the Center, lay a new sidewalk at the Library entrance, install a modern kitchen in Harrold Hall, and make other needed improvements.

Much remains to be done, and the society continues to seek grants and personal contributions to help with the cost of the remaining construction projects.

Harrold #8 Schoolhouse

We have completed installation of the sewage system. This work was accomplished through a $15,000.00 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community Development and the efforts of Tom Tangretti.

Work is proceeding on the construction of the restroom facilities for the historical building. The 84 Lumber Company has awarded our request for materials in the amount of $2,268.32; and the Hempfield Democratic Club has given us $200.00 toward the project. We are seeking support from local merchants to complete the job.

The Baltzer Meyer Historical Society also received a $1,000.00 grant from the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County supporting the building and installation of shutters for the windows of the schoolhouse -- estimated total cost is $3,000.00. We have used the $1,000.00 grant to install shutters on three windows on the most vulnerable side of the building.

We are working in conjunction with the Hempfield Area School District in restoring the schoolhouse. David Valerio is supervising the work. We hope to soon complete the project and have it student-ready.
